County Update…

With our first fiscal quarter behind us, let me give a quick rundown of what your local County Government is currently working on in 2017

  1. The Sheriff has successfully taken over operations of our Detention Center.  The staff comments have been positive for this change, and I am grateful the Sheriff was willing to take on this operation for the citizens of Sumter and Lee Counties.

  2. EMS is adjusting to their new work schedule.  We have a high number of staff testing for Paramedic Level Certification which will help fill the void of open positions.

  3. Public Works and Emergency Management had a quiet October for a change without any nationally declared disasters, but they remain on high alert with nearby storm activities in our southern region.

  4. Finance is in the middle of another external audit season with Webster-Rogers.  Much goes into this financial process which at times can be very stressful but our team steps up to the challenge every year

The numerous Capital Penny Sales Tax projects are well underway.  In May 2016 the Palmetto Park renovations were completed.  The Dillion Park walking trail has been completed and the new playground equipment has been installed.   Most of the Penny Projects are just beginning like the new City Public Safety Complex for the Police and Fire Stations on Lafayette Drive.  Public Works has paved 3.1  miles of dirt roads and resurfaced 11 miles.  The Recreation projects are nearly finished with the engineering phase for the Dillon Park and Haynesworth Street plans to start construction in the middle of 2018.  Downtown improvements to the old Courthouse and County Administration Building are projected to start in late 2018

Other projects in the community that are currently under construction for the public include the Economic Development Office on Liberty Street and the new Mental Health Office on Pike Road.  In the near future, the new City Water Department on Harvin Street and the new Santee Lynches Council of Governments Office on Main Street will be under construction

There are a lot of positive improvements happening in our community.  Stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
