A New Year Is Here!

A new year is here!  That’s right, for Sumter County Government our new year begins July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014.

June was an extremely busy month for Sumter County.  The budget process was in full swing with the final budget approval vote taken on Friday, June 28, 2013, which seemed to be the last hour.

Living in the South...........

It’s nice to live in the South.  You cannot beat the 70’s and 80’s temperatures in May.  Once you endure the pollen season, what a great place to spend time outdoors.

Your County Government is hard at work.  The newest community center, Salterstown, will have its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Monday, May 13, 2013, at 3:30 p.m.  Located on Highway 401 just beyond Highway 378, this new community center will serve the citizens on the east side of Sumter for many years to come.  The new Sheriff’s Office Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting will be Friday, May 24, 2013, at 2:00 p.m.  The transition to this new location on Highway 15 North has been successful on many levels.

Spring is in the air...............

Wow, what a wet spring thus far.  Rainfall in these amounts cause havoc on our County dirt road system not to mention all of the private lanes.  We do our very best to manage the maintenance on these roads and your patience is greatly appreciated.

Plans are on schedule to open the new Sheriff's Office in late May.  Sheriff Dennis and his staff have been working closely with the Information Technology Department to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Spring is Fast Approaching...

Spring is fast approaching and your County workforce is working diligently preparing for a busy March and April.  Recreation and Parks declare spring is their busiest season of the year.  Kids that were all bundled up for the winter, coupled with cabin fever, are anxiously waiting to go to the ball fields when the weather breaks.  Public Works will be busy repairing the County road system damaged by winter weather.

March and April brings construction closure on two major capital projects, the new Sumter County Sheriff's Office and the new Sumter County Judicial Center.  These two buildings are slated to open in late spring or early summer.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone!  Sumter County is off and running with an exciting year ahead as our budget preparation season will start in early February.  County Council and staff will be focused for approximately four months planning for the operational and capital financial needs of the various County departments for the fiscal year beginning July 2013.

Bond Ratings Indicate a Healthy Government

I am happy to report that Moody’s Investor Services and Standard & Poor’s, the two  leading bond rating agencies, have assigned superior bond ratings of Aa2 and A, respectively, to Sumter County’s $6.5 million General Obligation Bond issue, Series 2012, while reaffirming these ratings to the County’s other outstanding debt.  Factors contributing to these ratings include the County’s strong financial position, low debt burden, rapid debt payoff, and manageable capital needs, which are all indications of a healthy and financially secure county government.

Gary's Blog

We are already two months into the 2012 fiscal year!  So much is going on in your County government.  We have had an unseasonable amount of rainfall in the Sumter area which has caused our road crews, who maintain more than 260 miles of dirt and gravel roads, great difficulty.  The rain has also caused delays in numerous construction projects such as the new Judicial Center and the new County Sheriff’s Office.  Although we have experienced these delays, we have been assured that the time lost will be recouped over the next few months.

Beginning of the Fiscal Year

Sumter County Government's fiscal year is off and running with new department allocations.  Your County's fiscal year budget is from July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013.

Significant changes in this year's budget include a three percent (3%) across the board salary adjustment for the 645 County employees.  This was the first salary adjustment our employees have received since 2008.  Also included in this budget are funds to support the opening of R.E. Davis Recreaton Community Center, the new Bethel Fire Station, the new Sumter County Sheriff's Office and the new Sumter County Judicial Center.
