Students taking part in Sumter County Government’s Youth Employment Program visited the Central Carolina Technical College Health Sciences Building today and learned about what it’s like to work in Emergency Medical Services and the Fire Department.
There’s a total of 47 students involved in the program, and they’re already working in several areas of County Government, as orientation was held on July 9. With a focus on mentorship, gaining real life experience in a branch of government and understanding a professional office environment, the students will also hear from several civic leaders over the course of the next month.
Sumter County Assistant Emergency Medical Services Director Kent Hall spoke about his job and the various levels of education needed to gain certification as an emergency medical technician, paramedic and more. He also touched on the dangers of texting while driving, the pitfalls of bullying and encouraged them to stay away from drugs and alcohol.
Fire Prevention Specialist Selena Ruth Smith of the Sumter Fire Department spoke to the students as well, explaining how one becomes a firefighter and the mindset needed to serve your community. Smith gave several demonstrations about her profession and the students also saw some of the equipment used by the Sumter Fire Department.
